I will start by saying these are all genuinely places that I have bought plants from and I have not been paid to talk about them!
So where can you go to buy plants? Well there are a wide range of places and I feel the selection is growing every day, which is great as there is even more choice and variety.
In no particular order:
- Supermarkets – supermarkets are great for those impulsive buys when you’re in there to get your weekly food shop. You don’t tend to see the showstopper plants in there (though my mum did pick up Mary from a Morrisons!) but you can get a good range of shrubbery-type plants for your garden and then small-scale houseplants. I bought quite a few of my earlier plants from my local supermarket.
- Homeware shops – I get a good bulk of my plants from shops such as Wilko and Ikea. They tend to have a slightly more expansive range of plants and in Ikea the plant section comes at just the right time (or wrong – depending on your wallet) as you’re heading for the checkout! I would say they tend to be the more common plants so if you’re looking to be different to the crowd you may want to look elsewhere.
- Garden centres/DIY shops – I have only recently started to go to garden centres as I have gotten more into plant care and propagation so needed to get the right tools and products. I often find a beautiful plant there that I just need to add to my collection. Case in point my rattlesnake plant that I recently bought from B&Q.
- Online shops – another avenue I have recently got into, I was previously sceptical as I like to see plants in real life and check for issues. But I must say I had a good experience buying from Patch plants, really good service and all my plants (Aggie, Callie and Roberta) are all doing really well.
- Friends and family – this is not really a purchase as you get them for free- unless your nearest and dearest are super-entrepreneurial. My mum has given me so many cuttings over the years, which have become the stalwarts of my plant family like my tradescantia and Christmas cactus. And now I can now share the favour!
I may do a more in-depth review of different shops in another post so look out for that.
