Introducing Callie Calathea: The Performing Prayer Plant.

Callie is my Calathea Veitchiana (Prayer Plant). She is one of my newest plants to my collection and one of my favourites. She is an absolutely stunning houseplant. A real showpiece and surprisingly straightforward to care for.

How do you care for Calathea Veitchiana?

Light: Calatheas likes moderate light, not too much and not too little. As my living room is long and narrow, I have put her closer to the window than I would in a square-shaped room and she is enjoying it better than where I originally positioned her.

Water: When I was researching, it seemed that calatheas need watering at least once a week. However, I have found Callie sometimes only needs watering every 10 or so days. I haven’t worked out why, would be interesting to hear your views.

Fertilising: Calatheas generally need fertilising every couple of months and that’s what I’ve been doing with Callie. I just use shopbought fertiliser but I am exploring alternative options. More on that later!

What I love about Calathea Veitchiana: THE LEAVES MOVE UP AND DOWN! Yes, in the mornings, the leaves are down to soak in all the morning light and then they move up over the day so they are all up at night time. Hence why they are called Prayer Plants. It’s so lovely to watch over the day, especially now I am working from home and can see it the change in between video calls and emails!

Do you have a Calathea Veitchiana or any other type? Do you have any advice or do anything differently? I’d love to hear.
