Calathea Tips Unfurling

What does a new Calathea Veitchiana leaf look like?

Look at this new leaf that is coming through on Callie my Calathea Veitchiana. New leaves are a great way of showing that your Calathea plant is healthy and well-taken care of.

On Monday, the leaf was quite tightly furled. Now in just 5 days it is well on the way to unfurling.

What are my tops tips for looking after a Calathea Veitchiana (Prayer Plant):

  1. Make sure you dust and clean the leaves. Depending on your environment, the leaves of a Calathea Veitchiana can collect quite a bit of dust which will affect how much light gets through to the plant and affect photosynthesis. I clean Callie’s leaves by using a little bit of organic washing up mixed with water on a paper towel and wiping the leaves down, following with a wet paper towel. I do this every couple of weeks.

2. Unless you live in a humid environment, then you should make sure you either use a humidifier or mist with a spray bottle as Calatheas like humidity.

3. As Calathea Veitchianas grow, their leaves get quite large so much sure you have enough space for the ‘praying’ this plant will do! Find out more about that on this page.

I’ll post more tips as I go. I also think I will need to repot Callie soon but I’m waiting a little while for various reasons!
