It sure is getting cold out here…..Happy 1st of the month! We are definitely getting into autumn now, aren’t we? And I am starting to think about winter preparations for my family of plants.
My plant collection has expanded quite a bit since last winter, I think at least by half as much. Unsurprisingly, most of my new plants were bought during the Covid-19 pandemic period. Can you believe that it has been around 7 months since the start of the lockdown period (in the UK), time has really flown!
I also have a lot more outside plants on my balcony. I think I will bring a couple of them indoors, like my Celosia (whose beautiful red flowers were lovely to look at outside during lockdown). But the others should do fine outside like my Fatsia Japonica. This is my first year with a full balcony of plants so I will just have to experiment and see what works.
As for my indoor plants, I will watch how they adapt to the change to cold temperatures and dry radiator heating. I am seriously considering getting a humidifier. I thought it may just be a fad but I think it may be worthwhile!
I will need to adjust the location of my plants as the days are getting shorter. I have had to place most of my plants right by the window due to most of my living room being in shade. My bathroom and kitchen get quite a lot of light but they are north facing so I’m not sure if it is worth relocating my plants there (although that would help with the humidity).
So many considerations! I will just experiment, I like trying different things and seeing successes and failures (as long as they do not lead to plant deaths!). I have been a plant lover and owner for many years now, well over 10 years as a proper enthusiast. So I think I have quite a good eye and sense for what usually works. Therefore, even though I have a lot more plants now and a growing outdoor collection, I think I should be fine…
We shall see!

Lovely plants. How are you going to protect your balcony plants from the harsh winter weather
Thank you! Some of them are hardy so should be fine outside. I will bring a couple of them inside but I am running out of space 😂
What a beautiful colour 😍 I want one!
Thank you 😊 I came across this randomly in a supermarket so try looking at the plant aisles there
