Sandy and Sally are my Schefflera arboricola plants, also known as Umbrella Tree or Dwarf Umbrella Tree. I got Sandy (in the picture above) first a couple of years ago and he has tripled in size since then. I have already had to prune him once as he had reached the ceiling and he is nearly there again!
Sally I got about a year or so ago and she has stayed relatively the same size but has grown outwards more since I changed her position.
How do you care for Scheffleras?
Light: Scheffleras like bright, indirect light, but not direct sun.
Water: I water Sandy, my bigger Schefflera about once a week. Sally, my smaller Schefflera seems to need watering more often and I usually water her twice a week.
Humidity: Schefflera like humidity so I mist them every week or so.
Fertilising: I fed the Schefflera about once a month during spring and summer.
What I love about Schefflera (Umbrella Tree): How fast they can grow. I have been so surprised by Sandy’s growth spurt, I didn’t buy him expecting him to be a big plant but I have to repot him twice so far and I’m not sure I can find a bigger pot! I also love their leaf colour – the outside a dark green with a light yellowish green in the middle.
Do you have a Schefflera? Do you have any advice or do anything differently? I’d love to hear.

No you can’t have too many plants, the only time you can stop the acquisition is when you run out of space
[…] It has really changed over the years. I have my childhood favourites like my alocasia, then I was into trailing or long limbed (if that’s the correct phrase) plants like my Christmas cactus. This year I have gotten into statement plants like my calathea. It may be a space thing also, as early on in my plant journey I was sharing flats with others so I couldn’t dominate with my urban jungle! Now I have my own space I am free to expand as much as I like. However, I am quickly outgrowing my space and can’t wait to have a bigger home (with more light!) so I can spread my plants around the rooms and invest in another giant like Sandy. […]
