Do I have too many plants?

Plants. How many are too many? I am pretty sure you are reading this page either because:

  1. You love plants and have a lot of houseplants yourself and are interested in seeing how other people look after theirs
  2. You’re new to plants and want to learn more about how to grow and care for them.

Whichever bucket you fall in, I would guess that you have an appreciation for how plants look and the effect they can have on you and your room/home.

A little bit on how I got into plants

My love of plants is based on my childhood. My mum is a keen gardener and great with plants and she got that green-finger from her dad. When I was growing up, I remember our house being full of plants, a real suburban jungle. I used to love how they all looked different and some were spiky, some were really big and some had beautiful flowers (of course I didn’t know the names at that time!)

However, I didn’t really get into plant care until I moved into my first flat after university and my mum gave me a few plants to get me started. The flat was quite bright and light and the plants did very well despite me not giving them that much time and energy.

When I moved again, I did put more time and energy into them however the conditions were different so some started to die and fail :(.

Over the years I started to grow more confidence and experiment with propagation and cuttings. I have loved seeing big plants grow from tiny seedlings.

It has been during the lockdown period/ coronavirus period that I have been able to dedicate even more time to my plant family and have bought a wider selection of plants than from your usual supermarket suspects. And now my living room is resembling the jungle of my childhood – just smaller and more contained in one room!

How many plants are too many?

So how many plants are too many? Well I don’t think that you can have too many plants as it all depends on whether you are going to really look after and care for them. If you’re not, then just stick with one or two statement plants which you can dedicate your time to. If you do have the capacity to look after many plants then go for it!

Just know that you’ll need to have a routine of sorts – it doesn’t need to involve spreadsheets and fixed times etc but you will need to know which plant needs watering when, which plants needs feeding, which plant needs repotting etc.

It is truly a time investment but the joy and wellbeing you get back from them are well worth it I think!
